Generic key based on Covain & Fisch-Muller (2007): The genera of the Neotropical armored catfish subfamily Loricariinae (Siluriformes: Loricariidae): a practical key and synopsis. Zootaxa 1462: 1–40. Most of the shown drawings are used with permission of the author and publisher of the former named document.

The key is extended by Fonchiiichthys, Leliella, Proloricaria and Quiritixys and the rediagnosis of Hemiloricaria by Isbrücker et al. (2001), Fonchiiloricaria by Rodríguez et al. (2011) as well as the rediagnosis of Cteniloricaria by Covain et al. (2012)
